According to reports, Newcastle have deemed defender Grant Hanley surplus to requirements ahead of the new season, with the player linked with a move to Birmingham City.
The 25-year-old Hanley managed only 13 games in all competitions for the Magpies last season, scoring one goal and failed to establish himself within the first team following an £5.6 million move from Blackburn Rovers last summer.
Now Hanley has been made available for a transfer this summer and with Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp is looking to recruit a new defender who has experience playing in the Championship, the Scotsman would be a good candidate.
As Hanley is contracted with the club until 2021, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez should be able to recoup some of the money that the club paid to sign him.
Benitez is looking to offload a number of players from hi squad and add new faces as he looks forward to Premier League action next term. Hanley did not take part in Newcastle’s past two pre-season friendlies and is certain to be leaving the club soon.
