Harry Redknapp has revealed that he feels that Newcastle United’s upcoming season could go very wrong and that the club will need to spend heavily this summer in order to avoid a relegation dogfight from the Premier League next season.
Redknapp wrote, “Rafa Benitez doesn’t need my advice as he’s one of the game’s top managers – so he knows the score.
“Yet we are a month from the close of the transfer window and – for whatever reason – he has not been able to do what he’s aware he has to do to make sure Newcastle do not go back down.
“That is get in more bodies, and high-quality bodies at that, or you fear it could all go horribly wrong over the next few months.
“I don’t want to be the prophet of doom for any club, I’ve a lot of mates who are managers in the Prem and I wish them all the very best. But there’s no escaping the fact some are facing a fight to stay up.”
The Magpies have thus far only recruited the likes of Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy, Javier Manquillo and Mikel Merino as they prepare for their return to the Premier League next season.
Along with Newcastle, Redknapp also suggested that Watford, Swansea City, Southampton, Burnley, Huddersfield and Bristol City could be in line to compete in the relegation dogfight during the upcoming season.
He continued, “I’ve identified Watford, Swansea, Southampton, Burnley, Huddersfield and Brighton as teams that are really going to be up against it. But the seventh of those in danger – Newcastle – is maybe the most surprising for me.”
