The Magpies complete their fifth signing of the summer

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Mikel Merino on a loan deal with a further option to buy the 21-year old Spanish midfielder, reports The Chronicle.

Rafa Benitez has secured the player from Borussia Dortmund as the German team weren’t interested in keeping a hold on to Merino.

“It feels good and I’m very happy to be here, to be part of this club,” said the midfielder after joining the Magpies.

Mikel was disappointing for Borussia Dortmund last season as he made mere 6 appearances.

Nonetheless, the talented Mikel will provide rigidity to Newcastle’s midfield alongside his defensive capabilities as he can play as a holding midfielder and as well as a centre back.

Despite his poor run of form, he managed to be a part of Spain’s U-21 squad that ended the summer tournament as runner-ups.

Newcastle United notably suffered a set back in absence of Jonjo Shelvey last season and Benitez is unwilling to take the risk in Premier League this term. Mikel has been his fifth signing this season after what he believes to be a slow start to the summer transfer window.
