Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could decide against sending Joe Gomez on loan, having apparently been impressed with the 20-year-old’s pre-season performances.
The defender has featured in every of the Reds friendlies during the summer, and has revealed he’s now 100% fit after returning to action in January – following more than a year on the sidelines.
Newly-promoted Brighton are interested in securing a season-long loan move for Gomez, but he wants to stay and fight for a frequent place on Klopp’s team-sheet.
The German manager seems to share his sentiment, as he told the Liverpool Echo, “The window is open until August 31 so we will see what is best for the player. Joe is another player who is now in the best shape since I have been in. It’s very positive. Joe can also play the full-back positions.
“He played there at Wigan with no training. We need him also in offensive situations. With Clyney (Nathaniel Clyne) and Milly (James Milner) injured, it’s important we have more options there.”
Gomez’s Liverpool career was dealt a huge blow back in October 2015 when an anterior cruciate ligament injury ruled him out of action until January 2017.
He has since bounced back stronger, and could prove to become a revelation if afforded the chance.
Perhaps, he could end up becoming the Virgil Van Dijk, Klopp so much covets. To become that though, the English youngster would have to first prove himself against Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.
