Everton veteran Leighton Baines has claimed that Wayne Rooney can help end the club’s trophy drought which has lasted since 1995.

The Merseyside club have spent more than £100 million this summer bringing in the likes of Rooney, Cuco Martina, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Sandro Ramirez and many predict that they could be one of the most exciting teams ahead of the new season.

Under manager Ronald Koeman, Everton should character with their performances last season and ended up qualifying for the Europa League.

They are aiming to challenge trophies and the England international Baines confirmed this, saying, “A trophy is the ultimate goal and I think that is what the manager has come here to do – to push us on to another level”

He went on to praise team-mate Rooney saying, “I’m fully aware of what Wayne can bring to us and I think he has already shown it in the few weeks he has been here.

“He’s done well in the games he’s played in, he’s got goals in the other games he played in, and he is a big character in the dressing room for us at half-time, before the games and around the training ground.

“He’s someone that you need in the squad. You need a handful of players who have got that personality and character. And he comes in as one of them. Get us there.”
