Newcastle United manager explains why he made questionable signing

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has spoken out about why he opted to sign Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.

The Manquillo spent last season on loan with Sunderland, who were relegated, and the 23-year-old will now get another shot at playing in the Premier League after linking up with the Magpies.

Many had questioned the decision of Benitez to bring Manquillo to St James Park, considering that the Spaniard was on the bench for the Black Cats for much of last season.

Benitez however believes that Manquillo has what it takes to succeed with the Tyneside club and said, “With Javier he can play in both full back positions, and we needed the cover the right full back.

“He has to improve from last season, we know, but he is a player who has the potential. Once he’s trained properly, and understands what we do, he can be a good addition.”
