Liverpool reportedly hoping top target pushes through potential record-breaking transfer

Despite several rumors, Virgil Van Dijk has not handed in a transfer request to Southampton, but Liverpool are hoping the Dutch national does apply pressure on the Saints to push for an exit, according to the Metro.

Manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to add more defensive stability to his back four as his side looks to challenge for silverware next season and Van Dijk is believed to be his top target.

The Reds are still aiming to bring the 26-year-old central defender to Anfield in spite of being reported to the Premier League over an illegal approach for the player by Southampton.

Southampton remain confident that their star defender will stay at St. Mary’s at least for another year, but would not want to keep an unhappy player at the club against his will.

Van Dijk has returned from his injury, that saw him miss out on the second half of the season, and has linked up with Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad for their pre-season training camp in Austria.
