Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic has made a controversial decision by switching his international allegiance from Croatia to Bosnia.
As a result of their still being tensions between the two countries in the aftermath of the Bosnian war in the 90’s, this decision is likely to make Simunovic unpopular among many people in Croatia.
Simunovic was eligible to make the move as he has only represented Croatia in international football in youth matches and has never featured for the senior national side.
One can presume that this decision may have been influenced by the frustration of not being selected for the national team.
He confirmed that he will be aiming to gain international selection with Bosnia by saying, “I have decided to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina. My parents and my grandparents are all from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“I was contacted by national coach Mehmed Bazdarevic and after our first meeting he gave me time to think about it.”
