Newcastle boss Benitez reportedly closely monitoring World Cup winner

According to reports, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is being kept informed of Pepe Reina’s contract dispute situation with Napoli as the Spaniard looks to add the veteran shot-stopper to his squad ahead of next season.

The Magpies are looking to add a new experienced keeper to their squad after missing out on Willy Cabellero, who has agreed to join Chelsea as a backup to Thibaut Courtois.

This past season, the Magpies handed opportunities to Matz Sels, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot, though none of them managed to convince that they are capable of holding down the position on a long-term basis.

One of the obstacles that may lie in the path of the Magpies in terms of luring the 34-year-old Reina is that he may command a £5 million price tag, which may be a put off for Newcastle especially considering his age.

It remains to be seen whether Reina will end up joining the club.
