Celtic Boss Comments on Racial Abuse in Scottish Football

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has said that he hopes that the racial abuse suffered by Scott Sinclair during the Hoops victory against Rangers last weekend will not hinder other players from coming to Glasgow.

After scoring the opening goal at Ibrox last weekend, a man who has since been charged, reportedly made a monkey gesture towards Sinclair. Sinclair suffered further racial abuse when a woman posted a picture of her daughter against a picture of monkeys on Twitter and wrote, ‘just bumped into Scott Sinclair at Edinburgh zoo.’

These incidents show the more unsavory reality of the football world. Racism does still exist and there is definitely more work that needs to be done in order to end it.

When asked about whether the incidents would make attracting players to Glasgow more difficult, Rodgers responded saying via Evening Times, “I would hope not,” “It’s an isolated incident. I would always speak in defence of the people up here and the football clubs here.”
