Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed that he was “surprised” to learn that he has become a target of a number of Chinese clubs.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Magpies’ game against fellow Championship high flyers Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday, Benitez said, “I was asking where it came from. I didn’t know.
“In the beginning of the season, a lot of people were talking about the Chinese clubs, but it was a surprise to me.”
Reports emerging from over the past few days have revealed that the far-east clubs are willing to fork out a salary of £660,000 per week to attract the services of the Spanish manager.
In addition to being linked with Chinese clubs, Benitez has been linked with the managerial position at Arsenal as the Gunners and long-serving manager Arsene Wenger have yet to reach an agreement over a new contract, which is set to expire soon.
