While speaking to EFE (via Sport Witness) this week, Leganes midfielder Gabriel Pires revealed that Newcastle United tried to sign him during last month’s transfer window.
Pires said, “Yes, I think it was true. But it’s gone and now I think of here, where I am and where I am going to be.”
When asked why the move did not happen, Pires revealed that his club had decided against it.
As a boost to Newcastle though, Pires has also failed to rule out the possibility that he will leave at the end of the season, saying, “That depends on many things. I don’t want to think about that now. I’ve never thought of leaving a club before the league was over.”
It is very likely that Newcastle will be promoted to the Premiership next season. Pires will also be keen to move away from Leganes to advance his career, hence as long as Benitez is interested, this transfer could very well take place next summer.
