Manager explains how close Newcastle were to signing £13 million man

Crystal Palace boss San Allardyce has revealed that Andros Townsend was never close to leaving his club.

After being relegated to the Championship last season, Townsend was sold by the Magpies to Palace for a fee of £13 million after he reportedly wanted out.

However, Townsend has been reported to be unsettled within the Palace first team and Rafa Benitez was reportedly keen to bring him back to Newcastle last month.

However Townsend remains with Palace and Allardyce appeared to suggest that he may not leave anytime soon. Chronicle Live reports him as having said, “Never. Not Ever. The only interest was a loan from Newcastle which was never going to happen – his long term future is with Palace.”

Based off the comments of Allardyce, it seems likely that Townsend is valued in the eyes of the Palace staff and he will likely not leave unless a rift ensues.
