Long-term Liverpool target Neven Subotic has confirmed his exit from Borussia Dortmund after spending 8 years at the Signal Iduna Park, reports Goal.
After the departure of Mats Hummels for Bayern Munich, it was expected that Subotic would extend his stay at the club.
However, as evident by his statement, Subotic has decided to say goodbye to the Bundesliga Giants.
“I am in the best age for a football player and I want to use my time to improve myself and my team every day. And I want to have the feeling I am needed and I can give everything for my club. That is what I am thinking about.”
Although he has confirmed rumors of his exit, Subotic hasn’t yet mentioned his new club. As a result, many top European clubs will be after his signature in the coming weeks.
Subotic has previously played under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund.
The pair enjoyed a brilliant relationship and the prospect of playing under the German once again could persuade Subotic to move to the Merseyside.
In addition to the former history of the duo, it is the current defensive frailties of Liverpool that might force them to acquire Subotic.
With Martin Skrtel set for Turkey and Kolo Toure released, Liverpool would be short of defensive options next season.
Add to it the uncertainty surrounding the future of Mamadou Sakho and there’s no reason why Liverpool shouldn’t go after the Serbian.
