Liverpool reportedly chasing Barcelona centre-back to fix defensive issues

As Liverpool Echo reports, Liverpool could be looking to place a bid for Barcelona’s player Thomas Vermaelen.

The thirty-year-old defender has been in the Spanish club for two seasons now, but unfortunately, a lot of injuries ruined his time there and he managed to appear only on 20 occasions in total.

West Ham is showing some interest too, and Klopp could be having a hard fight for Vermaelen’s signature, because the player has reportedly said he would prefer to return to London, rather than going to Merseyside.

The Reds had some troubles in their defensive line last season, because of Sakho’s ban and Skrtel’s and Lovren’s inconsistent performances. The only player who could get passing grade could be Kolo Toure, but he is too old to be seriously considered as a starter in next season’s league matches.

Bringing in Vermaelen would mean that Skrtel could be leaving soon, and with Joel Matip already coming to the club, there is no doubt Liverpool’s defensive line is going to be far more competitive than last season.
