Liverpool and Arsenal Target Stalls on new Borussia Dortmund deal

The agent of Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has cooled down talks of the contract extension of his client, igniting rumors of his exit from the Signal Iduna Park in the coming months.

After the departure of Club Captain Mats Hummels to fierce rivals Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund is eager to secure the long-term future of both Ilkay Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

While the former is tipped for a summer move to Manchester City, the reluctance of Mkhitaryan in agreeing on a new long-term contract poses serious problems for the Borussia Dortmund higher ups.

Mkhitaryan moved to Germany after spending 3 highly productive years with the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

Liverpool was after his signature that time, however, lack of Champions League football and the lure of playing alongside the current Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp took the Armenian to Germany.

Since signing for them, Mkhitaryan has been an integral part of the Borussia Dortmund attack.

Last season was undoubtedly his best at Dortmund as Mkhitaryan finished the season with a record 15-assists to his name.

“Why should we extend now? Micki (Mkhitaryan) still has a contract until 2017 and we’ll continue thinking about his future after that,” Mkhitaryan’s agent told German dailyBild.

While Arsenal are the clear favorites to land the Armenian due to Champions League football, the presence of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool could motivate the 27-year-old to decide in favor of the Reds.
