Liverpool have made a fine resurgence in recent times and the fantastic 4-1 victory over Swansea City on Monday night is a testament to the fact that the Reds may have well turned a corner this season.
Despite Liverpool’s renaissance though, they still have a long way to go before staking a claim for a Champions League spot and if indeed the Reds are to finish in the top four, manager Brendan Rodgers most certainly will need to strengthen his side during the January transfer window.
It is clear that Liverpool need a top class striker to ease their woes upfront but at the same time, the Premier League giants look weak at the back as well and their goalkeeping situation is not ideal.
Regular number one Simon Mignolet has lost the faith of Rodgers due to poor performances at the start of the season while back up Brad Jones is not considered good enough to man the post on a regular basis for Liverpool.
Therefore, it is widely believed that Liverpool will make a splash in the transfer market to recruit the services of a new goalkeeper and a host of names such as Sergio Romero, Mattia Perin and Petr Cech have been linked with the Anfield club.
Mexico star Guillermo Ochoa is also a contender who has been regularly mentioned to arrive at Merseyside and to fuel speculation that the 29-year old could be on his way to Anfield, Liverpool’s goalkeeping great Bruce Grobbelaar has stated that the Reds have already made a move for the Malaga custodian.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Grobbelaar confirmed, “Liverpool need another goalkeeper and I believe Ochoa from Mexico has been looked at.
“I’m not really any more encouraged by Mignolet [following his dropping]’.’He’s learned his lesson. He needs to play better. I’m a stickler on goalkeepers that don’t start in the right position and his starting positions have been all wrong.”
Ochoa only joined Malaga over the summer but has had first team football hard to come by and is said to be ready to leave the Spanish club in January as a result.
Liverpool have been monitoring Ochoa’s situation closely and the 29-year old could well prove to be an astute acquisition for the Reds – especially as he is available for as little as £3million.
