Four Players Manchester United Should Sign Right Now

THOMAS VERMAELEN

The Belgian defender is looking for a fresh start with a new club after being relegated as a third option behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for centre-back on Arsene Wenger’s side. In addition, Vermaelen has not re-signed a contract extension with the Gunners, leaving him with only one year left on his contract.

Vermaelen has great passing abilities, as he completed over 90% of his passes in the Premier League last season. His tall stature helps him win headers and impose his will over attackers. Vermaelen is confident with the ball at his feet and his dribbling skills are top notch for a defender.

One major downside of Vermaelen is that he is injury prone. The 28-year old has had multiple back, hamstring, ankle, foot, and knee injuries over the past six years.

Even though the Belgian defender has successfully recovered from a hamstring injury suffered during the World Cup, United manager Louis Van Gaal still has doubts.

As seen with Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, Van Gaal is hesitant on signing injured players who have yet proven that they have fully recuperated and are ready to play in top form.

Although Vermaelen would not be as good of an option as Hummels because of the Belgian’s injury concerns, Vermaelen’s leadership and experience as captain for Arsenal will be key assets that he would provide to United’s backline.
