As the transfer deadline quickly approaches, Manchester United is preparing to make moves to sell current players to be able to bring in new ones for the upcoming Premier League season. Manager Louis Van Gaal has already stated his intent to sell the players who did not perform well while on the US Tour.
With gaps in central defence and centre-back, Van Gaal would be keen to bring in players who could fill those roles.
The following list compiles players Manchester United should target and acquire before the September 1 transfer deadline.
MATS HUMMELS
In search of replacing stronghold defensemen Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United intends to sign Hummels, who was in impressive form for Germany during the World Cup.
Hummels would be a first-team option and a definite improvement over current United centre-backs Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Johnny Evans. The United trio have yet to prove their worth at Old Trafford and garner a regular starting position.
His dribbling, passing, and tackling are serious strengths of his, as he has become an indirect set-piece threat as seen in his World Cup goals against Portugal in the group stage and France in the quarter-finals.
Hummels loves to play in the back and is confident with the ball at his feet, which is appealing to Louis van Gaal’s attacking mindset.
Furthermore, Dortmund currently has four-centre backs which can create some serious and stiff competition for the German international and could limit the amount of playing time he has.
The addition of Hummels to the United squad would be a big signing, and a good one since the looming gap at central defence would be immediately filled.
