Edson Alvarez has a clean slate at West Ham United. Scott Parker has named him directly for the first time as manager, and he has explained his absence at Cardiff City.
Speaking to SunSport, Parker made clear that nobody at West Ham starts with a mark against his name under the new regime.
What Parker Said
“Every single player in the squad at this moment in time is a clean slate,” Parker told SunSport.
Parker then addressed Alvarez by name. “Alvarez had a slight niggle in his back, but he trained for the first time. The decision was to keep everyone together.”
SunSport also reported that Alvarez missed the trip to Cardiff with that back niggle and is now back on the grass.
Jacob Steinberg reported for The Guardian that Parker has wiped the slate clean with everyone in the squad, and that Alvarez and Soungoutou Magassa are expected to get opportunities.
What It Changes for West Ham
The explanation matters because the Cardiff squad invited the wrong conclusion. Another omission for a player frozen out under Nuno Espirito Santo looked like a second freeze-out under a second manager.
His season under Nuno amounted to 75 competitive minutes. He was not named in a league matchday squad in that time.
Nuno was sacked on November 3, and Parker was appointed on November 4. West Ham then drew 3-3 at Cardiff that night, fighting back after trailing by three goals.
Alvarez did not travel for that match. On Parker’s account, that was a fitness call on a player with a back niggle, not a selection verdict on a player he had already judged.
The change since then has been visible. Alvarez was pictured in first-team training under Parker on Friday, taking part in the new manager’s first session on the grass.
A fit Alvarez also gives Parker a midfield option he did not have at Cardiff. Magassa, restored at Cardiff, shows Parker will act on that promise.
None of that confirms a squad place yet. A training appearance is not a matchday return, and Parker has said only that he will judge players once he has seen them.
What It Means for Mexico
Alvarez is Mexico’s captain, and his club season has cost him his place. On Thursday, Mexico confirmed the official squad for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Jamaica, and Alvarez was not in it.
That omission follows directly from his lack of minutes. International coaches pick players in rhythm, and a midfielder with 75 minutes since August cannot make that case, whatever his history with the national team.
Alvarez has been a fixture of Mexico squads for years and played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Jamaica quarterfinals, on November 14 in Kingston and November 17 in Monterrey, come too soon for him. But the road back is clear, and it runs through regular football at West Ham.
If Parker gives him minutes through the winter, Alvarez returns to contention for Mexico’s next camps and for the Gold Cup next summer. Without them, his international future stays on hold.
The Blackburn Test
West Ham travel to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, November 7, and the team sheet is now the test of everything Parker has said.
If Alvarez is named in the squad at Ewood Park, the clean slate will have its first proof. If he is left out again, the back niggle explanation will face its first question.
Either way, the waiting is over. Parker has spoken, Alvarez has trained, and Blackburn will show what the fresh start actually means.
