West Brom’s George Campbell Set to Miss Millwall as USMNT Wait on Injury Update

George Campbell

West Bromwich Albion captain George Campbell is set to miss Saturday’s Championship match against Millwall with a groin injury, and the United States is waiting on the same medical update before deciding whether he keeps his place in its Nations League squad.

Campbell felt his groin during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton at The Hawthorns and was replaced by Nat Phillips at half time.

Head coach James Morrison said on the club’s official channel: “He just felt his groin so we’ll have to assess him in the morning.”

Reporting from the Express and Star says Albion will not risk their captain unless he is fully fit, and he is expected to sit out the Millwall match, the club’s last fixture before the international break.

Pochettino Is Waiting on the Same Update

Campbell was named on Wednesday in Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man United States roster for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal against Haiti, with the first leg in Miami on November 14 and the return match in Cincinnati on November 17.

Pochettino confirmed the injury could still cost Campbell his place. “We are waiting for more information, and if he’s not available, we will consider bringing other options,” he said. “We have time, and we should receive information today or tomorrow, and once we hear from their medical staff, we will make the decision.”

The squad begins reporting to camp near Atlanta on Sunday, so a decision is expected before the weekend is out. Campbell earned his first call-up in the previous international window, played in the friendlies against Peru and Canada, and now has three caps.

Why Campbell Matters to West Brom

The 25-year-old center back has become the leader of Morrison’s defense since arriving from CF Montreal in 2025, and he was given the captaincy in the summer.

Phillips is the ready-made replacement alongside Chris Mepham, but losing the captain is a blow for a side that is unbeaten in five matches heading into the final game before the break.

A New Contract Is Also on the Table

The injury comes in the same week Albion moved to secure Campbell’s future. The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reported on November 3 that the club has opened talks over an improved contract, even though his current deal runs to 2029.

The talks reflect his standing at The Hawthorns less than 18 months after his arrival from Montreal, and an improved deal would also strengthen the club’s hand after reported interest from Celtic earlier this year.

West Brom host Millwall at The Hawthorns on Saturday, November 7.
