Concacaf announced a new Gold Cup format on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the change is simple for viewers to measure.
The 2027 Gold Cup will have 39 matches, up from 31 under the old format. That is eight more matches, and every one of them lands in the Group Stage.
Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani said: “Our fans want to see the best teams in our region compete against each other, and this format will create more opportunities for those matchups to happen earlier in the competition.”
The full announcement is on Concacaf’s official website.
How the New Format Will Work
The tournament still has 16 teams. The Group Stage changes from four groups of four to two groups of eight.
Each team will play four Group Stage matches against four different opponents. Under the old format, each team played three.
The 16 teams will be split into eight pots of two, based on the Concacaf Men’s National Team Rankings. One team from each pot goes into each group.
Inside each group, the teams are organized into four ranking bands. Each team faces one opponent from each band, and a predetermined fixture matrix sets the matchups.
All eight teams in a group share one table. The top four in each group advance to the Knockout Phase.
Old Format vs New Format: The Match Count
| Format | Group matches | Knockout matches | Total matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old: four groups of four | 24 | 7 | 31 |
| New: two groups of eight | 32 | 7 | 39 |
The old math was 24 group matches plus seven knockout matches. Four groups of four produced six matches per group.
The new math is 32 group matches plus the same seven knockout matches. Each group produces 16 matches, because eight teams playing four matches each makes 32 team appearances, and every match uses two of them.
The Knockout Phase does not change in size. Eight teams advance, and the rounds are the Quarterfinals, the Semifinals and the Final.
What Eight More Matches Mean for Viewers
The Group Stage runs from June 17 to June 30, 2027. Thirty-two matches in that window means more matchdays and more broadcast windows than the old 24-match group stage.
Every team is also guaranteed a fourth match. A team that once could go home after three games now stays in the tournament longer, and its supporters get one more night of soccer.
For Mexico, the region’s biggest television draw, a fourth guaranteed group match matters if El Tri qualifies. Mexico is not in the field yet, because qualification runs through the Nations League and the Prelims.
Concacaf’s announcement did not name United States broadcast coverage for the 2027 tournament. Those details are still to come, and the confirmed news for viewers is the bigger match inventory itself.
Qualification and Key Dates
Fifteen Concacaf teams will qualify alongside guest nation Saudi Arabia. Eight teams qualify directly through the Nations League in November 2026.
The other seven places will be decided in the Gold Cup Prelims in March 2027. The Official Draw takes place on Thursday, April 8, 2027.
The Quarterfinals are set for July 3 and July 4, 2027. The Semifinals follow on July 7 and July 8.
The Final is on Sunday, July 11, 2027. Concacaf said the match schedule, host venues and ticketing information will be announced in due course.
