Mexico may have a surprise name in attack for November. TV Azteca reporter David Medrano reports that the national team directorate has reserved NK Osijek forward Armando León ahead of the squad announcement for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Jamaica.
Medrano posted the report on November 4 under the heading “SORPRESA EN SELECCION.”
“Armando León delantero mexicano que juega en Croacia fue reservado por la dirección de Selecciones y seria la gran sorpresa en la convocatoria de Rafa Márquez para enfrentar a Jamaica.”
The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed nothing about León.
No official squad list has been published. Mexico is set to present its November convocatoria on Thursday, November 5.
What Being Reserved Means
A reservation, known as an apartado, is the formal step the federation takes with a player based abroad.
The federation sends the required documentation to the player’s club so he can be released if he is picked.
It is not a call-up. León would still need to survive the final cut and appear on the official list to be part of the squad.
Who Is Armando León
León is a 26-year-old forward from Ensenada, Baja California. He was born on January 18, 2000.
He came through the Pachuca youth system and played in Liga MX with Leon before moving to Europe in 2024.
In Andorra, he scored 43 goals in 56 matches for Rangers FC.
He joined NK Osijek in July 2026 and plays in the Croatian first division.
This season he has scored five league goals for Osijek.
Why Marquez Is Looking at Him
Mexico scored only two goals in four matches during the last international window.
Head coach Rafael Márquez is still searching for reliable options at center forward.
León has never been called up by the senior national team.
If he makes the final list, it would be his first senior Mexico call-up, and it would come in an official competition.
What Comes Next
The official convocatoria arrives on Thursday, November 5. That list, and only that list, will settle whether León is in.
Mexico faces Jamaica in the Nations League quarterfinals on November 14 and November 17.
The second leg is in Monterrey. A place in the semifinals is at stake.
Until the federation publishes the squad, León’s status stays exactly where Medrano’s report leaves it: reserved, considered, and not yet called up.
