Chelsea travel to Sunderland on Sunday, November 8 with one selection question still open: whether Estevao Willian keeps his place in the starting lineup.
No decision has been announced. The Premier League fixture list confirms the match at the Stadium of Light, with kickoff at 2:00 PM UK time.
What is confirmed is why the question exists. Estevao earned this debate with his performance last weekend, and his head coach has said so publicly.
What Estevao Did Against Manchester United
Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday, October 31. Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, with goals from Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty.
Chelsea’s official site reports that Estevao registered six shots, the joint most by a Chelsea player in a top-flight match this season.
He also created three chances. Twice he put the ball in the net, and twice the goal was ruled out, once by the assistant referee and once after a VAR review.
The home crowd gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the match. He left the field to an embrace from head coach Xabi Alonso.
What Alonso Has Said
Alonso revealed after the match that Estevao had been told at the start of that week that he would start against United.
“He had the best response and showed that he deserves more and that he was prepared, and that is what we want from our players,” Alonso said.
Before the match, Alonso had explained the selection in simple terms. Asked why this was the right moment for Estevao, he answered: “Because he’s ready.”
Those comments raise the stakes for Sunday. A player who was told to be ready, delivered, and was praised for deserving more is not an easy player to leave out.
Why the Decision Is Not Simple
Estevao is competing inside a crowded front line. Against United, Pedro Neto led the attack, with Estevao, Palmer and Rogers in support, and all four contributed to the win.
Joao Pedro remains unavailable. Alonso has confirmed the Brazilian forward is out for a few weeks with a thigh injury, and he is not expected back before the international break.
Pedro’s absence means Alonso can start the same four attackers again at Sunderland. The harder squeeze arrives when Pedro returns, because five strong options do not fit into four places.
Sunderland also present a different test. They sit at the bottom of the Premier League table, while Chelsea start the weekend in fourth place.
Whether Alonso values continuity or rotation for that test is the decision. As of publication, he has not stated it, and Chelsea’s confirmed lineup will only be published shortly before kickoff.
The Wider Picture
Estevao’s season already carries recognition beyond one match. Chelsea confirmed last month that he has been nominated for the 2026 Golden Boy award.
The club also notes that he has become a regular for Brazil under Carlo Ancelotti, with six goals in 14 international appearances.
Minutes at Chelsea are the foundation of that progress. Sunday’s team news will show whether his United performance has moved him from impact option to starter.
