Liga MX has closed the case. In an official statement published on Monday, November 2, the league said Club América committed no violation of the Competition Regulations over Ícaro da Conceição’s use of the numbers 27 and 217 this season.
There is no sanction and no loss of points. The ruling ends a two-day controversy that started with an accusation from Toluca coach Antonio Mohamed.
What the League Said
The league stated that there is no violation of the Competition Regulations, because the change of numbering was carried out in accordance with the applicable regulatory provisions.
Ícaro began the Apertura 2026 registered with the first team, wearing No. 27. Club América then requested his move to the Sub-21 squad, and the change was formalized on September 10, inside the registration period.
Sub-21 players wear numbers from 181 to 230, so the Brazilian was assigned No. 217. The league said the category change was a duly justified reason to authorize the new number.
The club also obtained the Carnet Único for the player inside the deadline. That permit is what allows him to play in both the Sub-21 competition and Liga MX.
How the Accusation Started
After Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Toluca at Estadio Banorte, Mohamed argued that the real controversy was América’s squad, not the match.
“Polémico es que el América haya tenido 10 extranjeros en el torneo,” he said, pointing to a player whose number had been changed and who now played in the youth category. He later named Ícaro.
The count itself is not in dispute. Ten players not trained in Mexico have appeared for América this season. The league’s answer is that the limit of nine covers players registered at the same time, not players used across a whole tournament.
Ícaro’s move to the Sub-21 squad freed the foreign player slot América used to register defenders Santiago Bueno and Santiago Ramos Mingo late in the window. The ten players were never on the first team register together.
The case had a second thread. RÉCORD reporter Alberto Bernard argued on Monday that using two numbers breached Article 60 of the Liga MX regulations. The league’s statement cites that same Article 60, together with Article 53 of the Sub-21 regulations, as part of the basis that authorized the change.
What It Means
Ícaro, a Brazilian midfielder, has played six first team matches this tournament and scored once. He has also appeared twice for the Sub-21 side, scoring there as well.
For América, the matter is closed. The club keeps its points from the Toluca draw and stays level on 29 points with Chivas de Guadalajara at the top of the Apertura 2026 table.
