Match Preview

Spain have won Group F with a match to spare, taking six points from two games, scoring five goals and conceding one. The two-time champions are already through to the Round of 16.

Mexico are second on three points. Chile and Australia are level on one point each with the same minus two goal difference, and Chile sit third ahead of Australia on fair play points.

Chile must win to progress. A win takes them to four points and guarantees at least third place. Second place is possible if Australia beat Mexico and the tiebreakers fall their way.

The Group F runners-up face Nigeria in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 29.

Mexico face Australia at the same time in the group’s other match. The top two in each group reach the Round of 16, along with the four best third-placed teams.

Recent Form

Chile drew 1-1 with Australia on Monday, October 19. Kiara Concha headed Chile in front in the 33rd minute from a Josefa Munita cross, and substitute Charlotte Bradshaw leveled in the 63rd minute.

Chile nearly took all three points that day. Australia goalkeeper Dali Gorr Burchmore saved from Catalina Munoz in stoppage time to protect the draw.

Thursday brought a 3-1 defeat to Mexico after Chile led early. Munoz put Chile ahead in the 12th minute with a long-range strike, before Mia Urbano leveled in the 35th.

Citlalli Reyes completed Mexico’s comeback in the 65th minute, and Nicole Jimenez sealed the result in the 83rd. Chile have scored in both matches but are still waiting for a first win.

Spain opened with a 2-0 win over Mexico on Monday, October 19. Carolina Ferrera scored in the 42nd minute and Elena Vizuete added the second in the 48th.

Spain then beat Australia 3-1 on Thursday. Angela Galvez scored in the 10th minute, and Vizuete added a looping header in the 16th.

Galvez converted a penalty in the 66th minute to complete her brace. Frida Karaberis curled in Australia’s reply two minutes later.

Team News

Chile are coached by Vanessa Arauz, the Ecuadorian who took her own country to a senior World Cup in 2015. This is Chile’s third appearance at this tournament and their first since India 2022, where they recorded their first win at this level.

Catalina Munoz is the player to watch for Chile. She scored the opening goal against Mexico, and her stoppage-time effort against Australia was saved with a winner on offer.

Spain are coached by Mila Martinez, and they won this tournament in 2018 and 2022. A third straight win on Sunday completes a perfect group stage.

Vizuete and Galvez have two goals each for Spain, and Galvez was named Player of the Match against Australia.

Key Storylines

Chile must beat the group winners to survive. One point from two matches leaves no margin for error. Anything less than a win ends their tournament.

Spain can finish the group perfectly. Two wins have already secured first place. A third win sends Spain into the knockouts with maximum points.

Two pitches, one table. Mexico and Australia kick off at the same time, and every goal there changes what a Chile win is worth. Second place will be settled minute by minute.
