Atlas vs Club America Match Recap

Borja opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Back in the starting lineup after serving a one-match suspension, he finished from Brian Rodriguez’s pass to put Club America ahead.

The lead doubled two minutes later. Carlos Alvarez set up Erick Sanchez, whose left-footed finish from inside the area made it 2-0.

Atlas finished the night with more possession and more shots than the visitors, but none of that pressure told in the first half. They trailed 2-0 at the break.

Brian Rodriguez made it 3-0 in the 58th minute, scoring from Zendejas’ pass on the counterattack. Zendejas then scored himself five minutes later, finishing from the centre of the area for 4-0.

Both benches moved in the 68th minute. Club America sent on Henry Martin and Oscar Perea, while Atlas made three changes at once, among them Sergio Hernandez.

Atlas were handed a route back in the 73rd minute. A VAR review led to a penalty for the home side, and Esteves converted it to pull a goal back.

Five minutes later, Hernandez set up Mmaee to make it 2-4. The revival lasted one minute: Kevin Alvarez finished from close range in the 79th minute to restore the three-goal margin.

There were no red cards at Estadio Jalisco. Franco Rossano, Juan Purata and Sergio Hernandez were the three players booked.

Three Takeaways From Atlas vs Club America

1. Club America’s goals are coming from everywhere

Five different players scored for Club America at Estadio Jalisco: a striker, a midfielder, two wingers and a fullback. Borja, Erick Sanchez, Brian Rodriguez, Zendejas and Kevin Alvarez shared the goals.

That spread has become the pattern. Club America have now scored 32 league goals this season, and 10 of them have come in their last two matches, the 5-3 win at Leon and this 5-2 win.

No single scorer carried the night. Henry Martin did not score after coming on, and it did not matter.

2. Atlas had the ball and the shots, but Club America had the finish

Atlas held 58 percent of the possession and produced 22 shots to Club America’s 15. They also won 10 corners to four.

Both teams put six shots on target. Club America scored five of theirs; Atlas scored two, one of them a penalty.

Luis Malagon made four saves for the visitors. Camilo Vargas made one at the other end, and the scoreline followed from that difference.

3. Two goals in two minutes set the tone

The match turned in the first half, between the 26th and 28th minutes. Borja and Erick Sanchez scored in quick succession, and Atlas spent the rest of the night chasing a two-goal deficit.

The same pattern closed the game. When Mmaee made it 2-4 in the 78th minute, Kevin Alvarez restored the three-goal margin within 60 seconds.

Atlas kept producing chances between those bursts. They never got to build on one.

What the Result Means

Club America reach 27 points from 12 matches, four points more than Chivas Guadalajara, the nearest club to them on points. They still have a game in hand, the postponed Jornada 7 meeting with Tijuana on Wednesday, October 28.

Atlas stay on 21 points from 13 matches. The defeat is their first since September 12, when they lost 5-2 at Toluca, and it ends the four-match unbeaten run they carried into the night.

Two Jornada 13 matches were still being played on Wednesday night, so the complete picture for the round settles once those finish.
