What the Play-In Decides
The Play-In round brings together the four clubs eliminated in the quarterfinals. The four semifinalists have already qualified for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup, and two places remain open.
Those two places go to the winners of the two Play-In series. CD Marathón and Alianza FC meet in the other series, which opened on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
The clubs meet for the first time in Central American Cup history. The aggregate winner joins the semifinalists as one of six qualifiers from this tournament to the 2027 Champions Cup.
Road to the Play-In
Both clubs reached the Play-In by losing their quarterfinal series in September 2026. Their routes through the group stage and the quarterfinals show why each side is playing for a second chance.
L.A. Firpo. Firpo finished second in Group A with seven points, two wins, one draw and one loss, earning the first Central American Cup quarterfinal berth in club history. Olimpia then won both quarterfinal legs 3-0, for a 6-0 aggregate win.
Deportivo Saprissa. Saprissa finished second in Group C with nine points, three wins and one loss, behind an Olimpia side that won all four of its group matches.
In the quarterfinals, Saprissa drew 2-2 with Cartaginés in the first leg and lost the second leg 3-2 in Cartago, going out 5-4 on aggregate.
Firpo also carries domestic momentum into the first leg. A 2-0 league win on the weekend took the club provisionally to the top of the Salvadoran Apertura standings with 31 points, according to Publimetro.
Team News
Deportivo Saprissa travels to San Salvador without four members of its squad, according to Publimetro. Samir Taylor, Sebastián Padilla and José Carvajal are out with injuries, and Gerald Taylor is suspended.
The absences still leave head coach Hernán Medford with his main attacking pieces. Orlando Sinclair leads Saprissa with four goals in this tournament, and Gerson Torres leads the club with two assists.
For Firpo, Diego Ortez has been the leading contributor in attack, with two goals and two assists in the competition. No Firpo absence list has been reported ahead of the first leg.
Key Storylines
Goals from distance. Saprissa and Firpo lead the tournament in goals scored from outside the penalty area, with four and three. Mariano Torres has two of the long-range goals for Saprissa, and Mauricio Cerritos has two for Firpo.
Saprissa is finishing above its numbers. Saprissa has scored 12 goals in the tournament. Concacaf’s statistics show the club outperforming its non-penalty expected goals by 4.1 goals, the largest positive gap in the competition.
Firpo needs a home result. Saprissa is the higher-ranked club in the Play-In standings, with 10 overall tournament points to seven for Firpo, and Saprissa hosts the second leg. A first-leg lead in San Salvador is close to a necessity for the Salvadoran club.
The Second Leg
The series concludes on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá in Costa Rica, with kickoff at 8:30 PM ET. U.S. coverage of the second leg is also on Paramount+.
