Match Preview
Eighth place, the last Liguilla spot, currently sits on 16 points. Monterrey start the night two points below that line and Pachuca three below it.
Only the top eight advance directly to the quarterfinals, and the Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round. With five rounds left after this weekend, the loser on Sunday is nearly out of room for error.
Monterrey hold one extra card: their postponed Jornada 7 match at Queretaro, rescheduled to Saturday, November 14, is a game in hand on every club around them.
The recent history favors the visitors: Pachuca have won four of the last five meetings, including a 3-1 win on their last visit to this stadium in April 2026.
Recent Form
League matches only. Monterrey have won once in their last five: a 3-1 home loss to Atletico San Luis, a 0-0 home draw with Tigres UANL, a 1-0 home win over Cruz Azul, a 4-2 loss at Atlante and a 1-1 draw at Club America.
Diego Rossi gave them an early lead in that draw at Club America, before Santiago Bueno equalized in first-half stoppage time. They still could not close it out after a late red card for Miguel Borja.
Pachuca have taken eight points from their last five: a 2-0 win at FC Juarez, a 3-0 win at Atlante, a 2-2 home draw with Tijuana, a 1-0 loss at Santos Laguna and a 3-3 home draw with Necaxa.
They are winless in three since those away wins, but they keep rescuing points late: they came back from 2-0 down against Tijuana and from two goals down twice against Necaxa.
Team News
Matías Almeyda said this week that Monterrey arrive with a nearly complete squad. Stefan Medina and Luca Orellano are back in full training after missing the draw at Club America, with no suspensions to serve on Sunday.
Up front, Uros Djurdjevic is a doubt. He has worked apart from the group with a physical problem, and his availability will be decided closer to kickoff.
Pachuca welcome back right back Carlos Sánchez, who missed the Necaxa draw after reaching five yellow cards.
No other confirmed injury absence has been reported for either club ahead of Sunday.
Key Storylines
Salomón Rondón keeps rescuing Pachuca. The Venezuelan is the Apertura’s top scorer with 12 goals, and he scored twice in the final minutes against Necaxa last weekend to turn a 3-1 deficit into a point.
Almeyda’s seven finals. The Monterrey coach calls what is left of the regular season seven finals, counting this match and the postponed trip to Queretaro. It starts Sunday, against the club one point behind his own.
The officials will be watched closely. César Ramos takes charge on Sunday, days after Monterrey filed a formal complaint about the officiating in the draw at Club America. Óscar Mejía, who refereed that match, has no center assignment this round.
One point apart, and the winner passes the loser. A Pachuca win takes the Tuzos above Monterrey on 16 points. A Monterrey win opens a four-point gap and moves the hosts past the current eighth place mark.
What comes next for Monterrey and Pachuca?
Both clubs go straight into Jornada 13 on Wednesday, October 21: Monterrey travel to Puebla and Pachuca visit Cruz Azul.
