Match Preview
Toluca start the night in third place with 20 points, one behind leaders Club America and Atlas. A win takes them to 23 and, subject to the other results this weekend, could put them top of the table.
Atletico San Luis are 15th with 12 points. Eighth place, the last Liguilla spot, currently sits on 16 points, so even a win in Toluca leaves San Luis a point short of that mark.
There is no safety net underneath either club. The Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round, so only the top eight advance directly to the Liguilla quarterfinals, and five matches remain after this one.
Recent history in this fixture is one sided. Toluca are unbeaten in the last six meetings with Atletico San Luis, winning five of them, and San Luis have not beaten Toluca since August 2022.
The most recent meeting finished 1-1 at this stadium in April 2026. Franco Rossi put Toluca ahead in the second half, and Joao Pedro equalized for San Luis with a penalty deep in stoppage time.
San Luis have won only once in seven short tournament visits to Toluca, a 2-1 victory back in September 2021. Antonio Mohamed coaches Toluca, and Diego Mejia leads Atletico San Luis.
Toluca have not drawn a home match all tournament. They have won three and lost two at the Nemesio Diez, and both home defeats, against Pumas UNAM and Santos Laguna, came by a single goal.
Recent Form
League matches only. Toluca are winless in three: a 5-2 home win over Atlas, a 1-0 win at Puebla, a 3-2 home loss to Santos Laguna, a 3-3 draw at Cruz Azul and a 3-2 loss at Tigres UANL.
The problem is at the back. Toluca conceded only six goals across their first eight matches of the tournament, and they have conceded nine across the last three.
The Santos Laguna defeat still stings at the Nemesio Diez. Toluca led 2-0 in that match and lost 3-2 to a stoppage time goal.
Atletico San Luis have lost three of their last five: a 3-0 home loss to Chivas de Guadalajara, a 2-0 loss at Leon, a 3-1 home win over Necaxa, a 3-2 win at Pumas UNAM and a 2-1 home loss to Santos Laguna.
Their best work has come on the road. San Luis scored three goals in each of their two away wins this season, at Monterrey and at Pumas UNAM.
The defensive numbers explain the rest. San Luis have kept only one clean sheet all tournament, a 0-0 draw with Tijuana in Jornada 3, and they have conceded 20 goals in 11 matches.
Team News
Toluca are without Marcel Ruiz. The midfielder is out long term with a knee injury, and he is not expected to return this calendar year.
Head coach Antonio Mohamed was sent off at halftime of the Jornada 11 defeat at Tigres UANL. No official disciplinary ruling on a possible bench ban had been published when this article was prepared.
Atletico San Luis remain without Joao Pedro. The forward tore a cruciate ligament in a preseason friendly in June, and he is expected to miss the whole Apertura 2026.
Joao Pedro was the club’s scoring champion in each of the last two tournaments, so his absence has shaped San Luis’s season. Beyond the two long term absences, neither club has a confirmed suspension to serve on Saturday.
Key Storylines
Toluca’s leak against San Luis’s road attack. Toluca have conceded exactly three goals in each of their last three matches. San Luis have scored three goals in each of their away wins, including the 3-2 victory at Pumas UNAM in Jornada 10.
Federico Vinas leads the Toluca line. Vinas is Toluca’s top scorer with five league goals. He equalized at Tigres UANL in Jornada 11 before Juan Brunetta scored the winner for the hosts.
Pressure builds on Mohamed. Toluca have taken one point from their last three matches, and their head coach ended Jornada 11 with a halftime red card. A fourth match without a win would invite real questions at the Nemesio Diez.
San Luis spread their goals around. David Rodriguez and Sebastien Salles-Lamonge lead the club with three league goals each. Salles-Lamonge scored twice from the penalty spot in the win at Pumas UNAM, and both men will carry the threat in Toluca.
San Luis need a result they never get here. A draw takes San Luis to 13 points and keeps them in touch with eighth place. But they have not won in Toluca since September 2021, and a loss leaves them at least three points below the line.
What comes next for Toluca and Atletico San Luis?
Atletico San Luis are back home on Tuesday, October 20, against Queretaro, and Toluca stay at the Nemesio Diez to host Tijuana on Wednesday, October 21. Jornada 13 arrives quickly for both clubs.
