Match Preview

Club America start the night top of the Apertura with 21 points from 10 matches: six wins, three draws and one defeat. They also hold a game in hand, because their postponed Jornada 7 match against Tijuana will be played on October 28.

Leon have 18 points from 11 matches and start the night inside the top eight. Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round: the top eight go straight to the Liguilla quarterfinals, and tied playoff series send the better-placed team through, so exact position matters.

The race above Leon tightened on Friday night. Atlas won at Necaxa to reach 21 points, level with Club America, who stay top on goal difference. Toluca and Queretaro, both on 20 points, also play this weekend.

So the stakes at Estadio Leon are simple. A Leon win levels them with Club America on 21 points. An America win opens a six-point cushion over Leon and keeps Guillermo Almada’s side in control of first place.

The history points one way, with one exception. Club America are unbeaten in the last nine league meetings between the clubs, but Leon won the most recent meeting in any competition, in the Leagues Cup in September.

Recent Form

League matches only, last five played. Leon are unbeaten in four: they drew 1-1 at Puebla, beat FC Juarez 2-1 at home, drew 1-1 at Queretaro, beat Atletico San Luis 2-0 at home and lost 3-1 at Pumas UNAM.

At Puebla last weekend, Ismael Diaz put Leon ahead in the 42nd minute before Eduardo Armenta equalized late for the hosts. Leon’s two wins in this unbeaten run both came at Estadio Leon.

Club America’s last five brought a 1-1 draw with Monterrey, a 4-2 win at Necaxa, a 2-2 draw with Chivas de Guadalajara, a 4-3 defeat at Cruz Azul and a 2-0 win over Puebla.

That Cruz Azul defeat is still America’s only league loss of the tournament. They have scored 22 goals in their 10 matches, and they have taken points from four of their five league matches on the road.

Team News

Leon are without Jordi Cortizo. The midfielder was shown a straight red card in stoppage time of the draw at Puebla, for an elbow, and he serves his suspension on Saturday night.

Club America traveled to Leon without two important players. Miguel Borja is suspended after his red card against Monterrey in Jornada 11, so he misses the trip entirely.

Raphael Veiga also stayed in Mexico City. The Brazilian midfielder took a knock in training this week, and Almada chose not to risk him against Leon.

Henry Martin is expected to lead the line in Borja’s place. Victor Davila is back in training after his long ACL absence, but he was not registered for the Apertura, so he cannot play on Saturday.

Key Storylines

Nine league meetings without a Leon win. Club America’s unbeaten league run against Leon stretches back nine matches. The most recent league meeting, in April, finished 3-2 to America at Estadio Leon, with Alex Zendejas converting a 77th-minute penalty for the winner.

Leon broke the pattern in the Leagues Cup on September 6, winning 1-0 in Houston with Diber Cambindo scoring the only goal. That result is the hosts’ proof that this America side can be beaten, even if the league record says otherwise.

The striker change at Club America. Borja’s suspension and Veiga’s absence remove two of Almada’s regular attacking pieces in the same week. Henry Martin steps back into the starting role, against a Leon defense that has conceded 12 goals in 11 matches.

At the other end, Cambindo leads the Leon attack. He scored the winner in the Leagues Cup meeting, and Leon’s unbeaten run has been built on making Estadio Leon count.

First place is live. Atlas already reached 21 points on Friday, and Toluca and Queretaro sit on 20. If Club America slip in Leon, they could end the weekend off the top of the table for the first time in weeks.

For Leon, the prize is just as clear. A win pulls them level with the leaders and into the heart of the top-four race, with five matches left after this one to defend the position.

What comes next for Leon and Club America?

Leon travel to Tigres UANL on Tuesday, October 20 in Jornada 13, with kickoff at 11:00 PM ET. Club America visit Atlas at Estadio Jalisco on Wednesday, October 21, with kickoff at 9:00 PM ET. Both are back on the road in midweek.
