Match Preview
Chivas de Guadalajara began Jornada 12 in fourth place with 19 points from 11 matches: five wins, four draws and two defeats. Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round, so the top eight go straight into the Liguilla quarterfinals and every point of cushion matters.
The race tightened on Friday night. Atlas won at Necaxa to reach 21 points and move above Chivas de Guadalajara in the live table, and Toluca and Queretaro, both on 20 points, also play on Saturday.
A win takes Chivas de Guadalajara to 22 points and keeps them firmly in the top-four fight. A defeat, with Leon and Atlas both on 18 points at the start of the round, could pull them toward the bottom of the eight by Sunday night.
Tigres UANL have 13 points and start the weekend outside the Liguilla places. Two straight wins have revived a season that was drifting, and a third would pull them right into the top-eight race with five matches left to play.
There is also a score to settle. The clubs last met at Estadio Akron in May, in the Clausura 2026 Liguilla quarterfinal second leg, and Chivas de Guadalajara won 2-0 to advance. Tigres UANL have waited five months for this trip back.
Recent Form
League matches only. Chivas de Guadalajara won the first two matches of this run, 3-0 at Atletico San Luis and 3-0 at home to Pumas UNAM, then drew 2-2 at Club America, lost 2-0 at home to Queretaro and drew 1-1 at Atlas.
They are winless in three since the Pumas UNAM victory. In the Clasico Tapatio last weekend, Angel Sepulveda equalized in the 86th minute after Kevin Zenon had put Atlas ahead, and Sepulveda also had a penalty saved by Camilo Vargas.
Tigres UANL have lost once in their last five. They drew 1-1 with Necaxa and 0-0 at Monterrey, lost 2-0 at FC Juarez, then beat Puebla 1-0 and Toluca 3-2 in back-to-back home matches.
Juan Brunetta decided both wins. He converted the penalty that beat Puebla, then scored twice against Toluca, including the winner on the hour, and he leads Tigres UANL with six league goals this season.
The split behind this matchup is stark. All three of Tigres UANL’s wins this tournament have come at home, and none away. Chivas de Guadalajara have lost twice at Estadio Akron, both times by 2-0.
Team News
Chivas de Guadalajara are without seven players, their longest absence list of the tournament. Captain Luis Romo is still recovering from the thigh injury he suffered on Mexico duty, and Diego Campillo is out with the foot injury he picked up in the Clasico Tapatio.
Reports this week said scans ruled out a fracture in Campillo’s foot, but no return date has been confirmed. Jose Castillo, Miguel Gomez, Miguel Tapias and Bryan Gonzalez are also unavailable through injury.
Kevin Castaneda is suspended after his stoppage-time red card against Atlas. Omar Govea returns for Gabriel Milito after serving his own one-match suspension in Jornada 11.
Tigres UANL’s main news is positive. Brunetta took a knock to his right ankle against Toluca and sat out training on Tuesday as a precaution, but he trained fully with the group on Wednesday and is available for Victor Manuel Vucetich.
Their long-term list is unchanged. Marcelo Flores and Jesus Angulo are both out until 2027 after knee surgery, Francisco Reyes is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, and Marco Farfan and Romulo Zwarg also miss out.
Key Storylines
The Estadio Akron regular-season streak. Chivas de Guadalajara have not beaten Tigres UANL at home in a regular-season match since July 28, 2019. The six regular-season meetings at Estadio Akron since then brought three draws and three Tigres UANL wins.
The May Liguilla victory broke the drought in knockout play, when Santiago Sandoval scored both goals in the 2-0 second-leg win. The aggregate finished 3-3, and Chivas de Guadalajara advanced on their better regular-season position. The league streak, though, is still running.
Brunetta against a rebuilt defense. With Romo, Campillo, Castillo and Tapias all out, Milito has to rebuild his back line and midfield again. He has repeated a starting lineup only three times all tournament because of injuries and call-ups.
Brunetta is the player built to punish that instability. He has six goals and four assists this season, and he has scored three of Tigres UANL’s four goals across their last two matches.
Ricardo Marin carries the home attack. Marin leads Chivas de Guadalajara with five league goals, and Sepulveda’s late equalizer at Atlas showed the hosts still have a second route to goal. Against a Tigres UANL side that has conceded 15 in 11 matches, both will get chances.
Provisional places are on the line. A Tigres UANL win takes them to 16 points and into the fight for eighth, subject to the rest of the weekend results. A draw does little for the visitors. For Chivas de Guadalajara, anything but a win invites the clubs behind them closer.
What is next for Chivas de Guadalajara and Tigres UANL?
Both clubs play again on Tuesday, October 20 in Jornada 13. Chivas de Guadalajara host Necaxa at Estadio Akron, with kickoff at 8:07 PM ET, while Tigres UANL return home to face Leon at Estadio Universitario, with kickoff at 11:00 PM ET.
