Raphael Veiga will miss Club América’s trip to León on Saturday. According to Carlos Rodrigo Hernández of FOX Sports México, the Brazilian midfielder suffered a knock in training, and head coach Guillermo Almada has decided not to risk him in one of the hardest away matches of the Apertura 2026.
It is the second time this season a training knock has cost Veiga a match. He missed the Necaxa game before the September international break with an ankle knock, and Carlos Álvarez stepped in for him that day. The Spanish midfielder is again the expected replacement at León. Veiga has been close to ever-present for Almada this tournament, with one goal and two assists, and his absence removes the side’s main link between midfield and attack.
The news also reframes the lineup story from earlier today. TUDN’s Gibrán Araige had reported Álvarez in line to start ahead of Veiga because the Brazilian’s profile had not fully convinced Almada. The change now appears to be medical rather than tactical. Club América have published no official medical report on Veiga, and no recovery timeline has been confirmed.
The swap changes how América build attacks. Veiga plays between the lines and speeds up the final pass, while Álvarez offers control and circulation deeper in midfield, which puts more of the creative burden on Alejandro Zendejas and Brian Rodríguez out wide. Against a León side unbeaten in four straight matches and sitting fifth in the table, it is a real test of the squad’s depth at the top of the standings.
Veiga joins striker Miguel Borja, suspended, on the absentee list for Saturday. Cristián Borja is available after his own injury scare against Monterrey. Club América travel to Estadio León at the top of the table on 21 points, with kickoff at 7:00 PM Central time. Tomorrow’s team sheet will confirm Álvarez’s start, and U.S. viewing information for the match is on the Club América watch page.
