Match Preview
Atlas make the trip to Aguascalientes holding sixth place with 18 points, and sixth place matters more than usual this season. Apertura 2026 has no Play-In round: the top eight at the end of the regular season go straight into the Liguilla quarterfinals.
Their cushion is thin. Atlas are level on points with fifth-place Leon, one point ahead of Cruz Azul and three ahead of eighth-place Tijuana, and Tijuana play later on Friday night. A win takes Atlas to 21 points, level with current leaders Club America, who play at Leon on Saturday.
A defeat could still cost them their place in the eight by the end of the weekend. Cruz Azul host FC Juarez on Saturday, and the winner of Friday’s late match between Tijuana and Puebla would also close right up behind them.
Necaxa’s position is close to desperate. They sit 17th with nine points, six behind eighth place, and they have not won a league match since July.
They were minutes from ending that run last weekend. Necaxa led 3-1 late at Pachuca, with goals from Espindola, Carranza and a Valencia penalty, only for Salomon Rondon to score twice in the closing minutes and rescue a 3-3 draw for the hosts.
The last meeting between these clubs finished 1-0 to Atlas at this same stadium in January, with Alfonso Gonzalez scoring the only goal in the first half. Atlas also won the meeting before that, 3-2 at Estadio Jalisco in September 2025.
Recent Form
League matches only. Necaxa have taken two points from their last five: draws at Tigres UANL (1-1) and Pachuca (3-3) around home defeats to Puebla (0-1) and Club America (2-4) and a 3-1 loss at Atletico San Luis.
Estadio Victoria has stopped being a refuge. Necaxa won their first two home matches of the tournament, against Atlante and Monterrey in July, and have lost four straight at home since then.
Atlas are unbeaten in three. Their last five brought draws with Atlante (1-1), Pumas UNAM (1-1) and Chivas de Guadalajara (1-1), a 3-2 comeback win at Tijuana, and a 5-2 defeat at Toluca as the only loss in that stretch.
Their away form is the real story of this matchup. Atlas have won four of their five matches on the road this season, at Leon, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul and Tijuana, and they have scored in each of their last eight league matches.
Team News
Atlas are without Duk for the rest of the Apertura. The Cape Verde forward ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee against Pumas UNAM in Jornada 9, and the club confirmed he needed surgery, with a minimum recovery of six months that ends his tournament.
Luis Esteves has picked up part of the scoring load in his absence. The midfielder leads Atlas with four goals this season.
Necaxa have no confirmed absences reported for Friday, and no suspension has been confirmed for either club. Beyond Duk, no other absence has been officially confirmed for either squad this week.
Key Storylines
Juan Reynoso is still waiting for his first Necaxa win. Reynoso replaced Martin Varini after Jornada 8 and has drawn one and lost two of his three matches in charge. The nine-match winless run hangs over everything on Friday: another slip leaves Necaxa at least six points off the Liguilla line with five matches left to play.
Atlas on the road against Necaxa at home. Atlas have taken 12 of a possible 15 points away from home this season, while Necaxa have lost four straight at Estadio Victoria after winning their first two. The wins at Cruz Azul and Tijuana are the template Hernan Crespo will want to repeat in Aguascalientes.
Julian Carranza against the Atlas defense. Carranza has seven goals, second only to Salomon Rondon’s 12 in the Apertura scoring race. Atlas have conceded 18 goals in 11 matches, the most of any club in the current top six, so Necaxa’s one reliable scorer against that back line may decide the night.
What is next for Necaxa and Atlas?
Both clubs play again in the midweek Jornada 13. Necaxa travel to Chivas de Guadalajara on Tuesday, October 20, with kickoff at 8:07 PM ET at Estadio Akron. Atlas return home to face Club America at Estadio Jalisco on Wednesday, October 21, with kickoff at 9:00 PM ET.
