Why This Friendly Matters
El Super Clasico is the biggest rivalry in Mexican soccer, and this is a rare U.S. staging: a sold-out Oakland Coliseum for a friendly in the middle of the October FIFA window. It is a rematch of the September 19 Liga MX meeting at Estadio Azteca, which ended 2-2.
Chivas Guadalajara arrive smarting from a 2-0 home defeat to Queretaro on September 26 that ended an eight-match unbeaten run and cost them ground in the race at the top of the Apertura table. Club America come in off a 4-2 win at Necaxa on September 27 that kept them level on points with Toluca near the summit.
With both squads expected to be missing players called up for international duty, the friendly doubles as an audition for fringe players and youngsters on both sides. For Chivas Guadalajara, it is also an immediate chance to respond after the Queretaro setback in front of a heavily pro-Mexican crowd in the Bay Area.
