Haiti opened their CONCACAF Nations League A campaign with a dramatic 3-2 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday night, scoring twice in stoppage time to complete a comeback from 2-1 down at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Fafa Picault gave Les Grenadiers the lead in the 23rd minute, heading home Wilson Isidor’s assist, but Wayne Frederick hit back for Trinidad and Tobago in the 31st minute to send the teams in level at 1-1 at halftime. After the break, Levi Garcia’s 59th-minute strike put the Soca Warriors 2-1 ahead, only for Haiti to turn the match around in stoppage time: Garven Metusala headed in from a corner in the 91st minute to make it 2-2, and Wilson Isidor headed the 98th-minute winner to seal all three points on Matchday 1 of League A, Group A.
Winning start to the Badia era
The victory marks a winning start to the David Badia era. The Spanish coach took charge with Haiti still unable to play at home, staging this fixture at Sabina Park in Kingston. It was also Haiti’s first outing since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Les Grenadiers lost all three group games to Scotland, Brazil and Morocco.
Trinidad and Tobago’s wait goes on
For Trinidad and Tobago, the defeat extends a miserable run. Derek King’s side have now lost seven matches in a row and are winless in ten, a streak stretching back through the end of the Dwight Yorke era. The Soca Warriors hit back once to level the score and briefly led 2-1 through Levi Garcia, but could not find an answer to Haiti’s late surge.
What it means
The result puts Haiti on three points at the top of the early Group A standings and extends their unbeaten run against Trinidad and Tobago to five matches, a sequence that includes the 1-1 draw between the sides at the 2025 Gold Cup. Trinidad and Tobago leave Jamaica empty-handed and under immediate pressure heading into Matchday 2.
What’s next
Haiti stay in Kingston to face Costa Rica on Sunday, September 27, while Trinidad and Tobago visit the Dominican Republic the same day.
