Liga MX Power Rankings - Clausura 2020

A new Liga MX season is about to begin when the Clausura 2020 kicks off with the Morelia vs Toluca and Xolos vs Santos Laguna games this Friday, January 10 at 7:00 PM Pacific. This season will bring many wonderful goals, joy, pain, and memories good and bad. This Liga MX list will show the Power Rankings of all 18 teams prior to the start of the Clausura 2020.

1. Monterrey

Rayados has been outstanding ever since Antonio Mohamed took over halfway through the Apertura 2019, leading the team to win the title. Monterrey had a wonderful December which could only have been improved if they did not concede a goal in the last minutes against Liverpool in the Qatar Club World Cup. This team enters the new Clausura 2020 as #1 due to its coach, star squad, and because it seems that this team has a rhythm which will be difficult to contain. Expect them to be on top of this list next week even though they will not play this weekend.

2. Tigres UANL

The team managed by Ricardo Ferretti strives for consistency. Tigres will line up with the same core of starting players from the previous few seasons lead by Andre-Pierre Gignac on offense, Guido Pizarro in the midfield, Hugo Ayala on defense, and Nahuel Guzman as the keeper. This team has one of the best squads in all Latin America, plus with the addition of forward Nicolas Lopez, their offense will potentially be the best this season.

3. Club America

The ‘aguilas’ was a nice surprise when they reached the Apertura 2019 final considering their starting offense was made of Federico Viñas and Henry Martin who were not considered starters at the beginning of the last season. Club America will most likely give the ‘expensive’ Nicolas Castillo another shot at the starting lineup this season, and he gets in form, this offense will improve even more. The ream from ‘coapa’ has a well-rounded lineup which could soon see the departure of their top performer Guido Rodriguez. Nonetheless, Miguel Herrera has a strong squad and management with a nice wallet meaning this team will be in a good position to compete for the Clausura 2020 title.

4. Club Leon

The team managed by Ignacio Ambriz was outstanding throughout the Apertura 2019 regular season finishing in 2nd place with 33 points. The ‘panzas verdes’ scored 38 goals and had one of the best defensive records with 23 goals allowed. This offseason, the team from Guanajuato suffered a blow as they could not sign long-term star forward Jose Juan Macias. This should affect the team’s offense but this team still has a privileged well-rounded squad that will easily reach the playoffs.

5. Santos Laguna

Sorry Chivas de Guadalajara fans, but the rebaño sagrado did not make the top 5 of the power rankings; thanks to the team from the ‘comarca lagunera’. Santos Laguna was exceptional during the regular season where they finished in 1st place with 37 points, led with the league’s best offense which scored 40 goals. The team coached by Guillermo Almada has a good squad without the league’s most expensive or popular players. This team will be lead on the attack by Julio Furch and Brian Lozano directly into the playoffs. However, they will not have the same results as last season, simply because that does not happen regularly in the Liga MX, especially when there are teams like the Top 4.

6. Chivas de Guadalajara
7. Monarcas Morelia
8. Pachuca
9. Xolos Tijuana
10. Cruz Azul
11. Queretaro
12. Puebla
13. Pumas UNAM
14. Atlas
15. Necaxa
16. Toluca
17. Atletico San Luis
18. Juarez
