This Wednesday, January 30, 2019, Monterrey officially announced the signing of Mexican fullback Miguel Layun from Spanish team Villarreal. Layun had been playing in Europe consecutively since 2015, but had also played in Italy with Atalanta from 2009-2010.
The 30-year-old played in England with Watford, in Portugal with Porto and in Spain with Sevilla and Villarreal in his recent stint in Europe. Layun began his career in Mexico with Veracruz in 2007 and also had a very successful spell with Club America from 2010-2014.
The Mexican fullback has become a key player for the Mexico national team since he last played in Mexico and could possibly be playing in his last World Cup in 2022. Layun is now at another stage in his career, but still had the quality to stay in Europe with a decent team in a league like La Liga.
Layun has now entered a different stage in his career, but will surely be able to shine in the Liga MX. The 30-year-old should be a consistent starter, but it is unclear as to where he will play as Monterrey has solid fullbacks in Leonel Vangioni and Stefan Medina. Layun is versatile and could also play as a midfielder so it will be interesting to see where Diego Alonso places him.
