This past Sunday, December 23, 2018, Monterrey officially announced the signing of 26-year-old attacking midfielder Maximiliano Meza from Argentine club Independiente. Meza was part of Argentina’s squad in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and just may be the biggest signing in the Liga MX heading into the 2019 Clausura season.

The Argentine midfielder has been playing professionally since 2012 and first played with Gimnasia y Esgrima in his native country up until 2016. Meza then made a huge career move to Independiente in Argentina, where he was part of a Copa Sudamericana title-winning team in 2017.

During most of his time with Independiente, Meza was coached with the unorthodox methods of Ariel Holan and it will be interesting how he transitions into Diego Alonso’s system at Rayados. The Argentina international was one of Holan’s most important players and certainly has the potential to become a star at Monterrey.

The 26-year-old plays best as an attacking midfielder, but can also play out wide as he has very good technical abilities. Meza can be that creative spark that Monterrey did not get this past season with Aviles Hurtado not playing to his full potential.

Los Rayados’ attack could now be even better than it was before with Meza and players like Rodolfo Pizarro, Angel Zaldivar, Jesus Gallardo and Rogelio Funes Mori. Diego Alonso was able to lead Monterrey to the semifinals of the 2018 Apertura and will now be expected to be one of the top contenders in 2019.
