Five goalkeeper options in Liga MX to replace Tiago Volpi at Queretaro

Tiago Volpi signed a contract extension at Queretaro until 2022, but will be on a year-long loan in his native Brazil with Sao Paulo. Volpi could even be sold to another team or even Sao Paulo after this loan and may likely never play with Queretaro again in his career.

While his future with Los Gallos Blancos is uncertain, what is certain is that Queretaro must find a goalkeeper for at least the next two seasons. While the team may explore options outside of Mexico, here are five players that Los Gallos should explore in the Liga MX.

Rodolfo Cota

Cota had a very rough season with Leon as he eventually lost his starting role to William Yarbrough with Los Esmeraldas. The Mexican shot-stopper had an inconsistent season, but it should not be forgotten how impactful he was in Chivas’ 2017 Clausura championship.

Jose Antonio Rodriguez

Rodriguez had a spectacular 2018 Apertura campaign, but not many people noticed because he played with Lobos BUAP. The 26-year-old has now ended his loan with Lobos and Chivas will likely send him back on loan or could sell him to another team.

Juan Pablo Carrizo

Carrizo was once the starting goalkeeper for River Plate and also played in Italy with Lazio and Inter Milan, but these days he is sitting on the bench with Monterrey. The Argentine is clearly a talented keeper and could easily start for another Liga MX team.

Pedro Gallese

Gallese is one of the players that makes the most sense for Queretaro as he has been transfer listed by Veracruz. The Peruvian shot-stopper played at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and could be heavily targeted by several teams in Mexico and South America.

Luis Garcia

Garcia is a younger option for Queretaro and more of a gamble, but he has shown his talent before with Toluca. It is hard for the 25-year-old to get minutes with a goalkeeper like Alfredo Talavera ahead of him, but when “Tala” was injured in the 2017 Apertura, Garcia did step up and show that he can be reliable in between the sticks.
