The 2018 Apertura edition of the “Clasico Tapatio” between Atlas and Chivas de Guadalajara was played this Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Estadio Jalisco. Both teams had been struggling this season and were looking for a win that would serve as a huge boost in momentum.

The game started off in odd fashion as the rain and lightning bolts were dropping down from the sky in Guadalajara. The lights were flickering on and off in certain areas of the Estadio Jalisco, but the game was not delayed as intensity filled the air.

The first half of the encounter was very exciting and hard-fought, but riddled with injuries with the rough terrain because of the rain. First, Chivas lost centre-back Mario De Luna in the second minute of the match and Juan Basulto replaced him

Next, Atlas lost Ricardo Alvarez in the 22nd minute and had to be replaced with Bryan Garnica while Ismael Govea suffered a head injury for Los Rojinegros and was relieved by Gaddi Aguirre at halftime.

Atlas looked like the better team in the first half with plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. Chivas looked to have more fight when the second half began and that was shown in the 64th minute when Orbelin Pineda scored to give Los Rojiblancos a 1-0 lead.

Pineda released a powerful shot from outside of the box that would end up being the game-winner. Both teams would have a number of opportunities, Atlas would even have a shot by Jefferson Duque that would smash the post.
