Alisson Becker is widely regarded as being one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The 25-year-old was sublime for Roma last season and while he did not win any major silverware during his time with the Italian giants, he was included in the Champions League squad of the season last term.
Alisson has also managed to eclipse Manchester City’s impressive goalkeeper Ederson to the first-choice goalkeeping position for the Brazilian national team and he played all games of Brazil’s 2018 World Cup campaign, during which they were eliminated by Belgium during the quarter-finals.
Liverpool experienced goalkeeping problems last season with both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet being unable to convince the Kop that they were capable of holding down the first-choice goalkeeping position on a long-term basis.
Alisson had been strongly linked with the Reds as well as Real Madrid, who were searching for a new shot-stopper to replace Keylor Navas as their first choice.
While Los Blancos ended up purchasing Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea, they were also interested in Alisson. Many were expecting the Brazilian to join the Spanish giants, as they have a better record of winning major silverware in recent seasons.
Alisson eventually joined the Reds during the summer for £67 million, which became the record fee that a club has paid for a goalkeeper. This record has since been broken by Chelsea who forked out £71.6 million to lure Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.
Alissson has since spoken out about why he opted to choose to join Liverpool over Real Madrid. It seems that Jurgen Klopp’s side had wanted him more.
As reported by TeamTalk, he said: “It’s a thing that’s so important to me – to be happy and wanted, to feel valued. That is what Liverpool made me feel,”
“They are a huge club, they have had many great players, but when I came here, where I spoke to the people here, they made me feel wanted. All the staff, all the people, not to mention the players. It is an amazing group, some of them I have worked with before, like [Mo] Salah at Roma.
“I feel as though we can form a really tight group, working together to support each other. We are a team already, I can feel that. We can achieve good things together.”
