The Mexico national men’s football team did much of the same at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and crashed out in the round of 16. This Monday, the Mexico national women’s football team made its country proud by earning a gold medal at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The Mexico ladies defeated Costa Rica in the final by a score of three goals to one to win the gold medal. The team was down by a score of 1-0 up until the 59th minute when Charyln Corral scored to tie the clash.

That goal opened the floodgates as Kenti Robles scored just a minute later and Katie Johnson then scored in the 62nd minute. El Tri then controlled the match and went on to win the game against Las Ticas and take the gold medal in Barranquilla.

On a day with three Liga MX Femenil games, the national team showed its progression by being the most dominant team in the region. Mexico finished the tournament undefeated with five wins and outscored their opponents 18-3.

Mexico had seven different goalscorers in these games and the top scorers were Monica Ocampo, Katie Johnson and Charlyn Corral with three goals each. There are some serious signs of progression with women’s football in Mexico and this is another step in the right direction heading into 2019.
