According to reports, Oxford United are set to appoint Everton’s U-23 manager David Unsworth as their new boss.

The 44-year-old was a candidate to become first-team manager at the Toffees this season following the sacking of Ronald Koeman and he did manage the club on an interim basis before Sam Allardyce was appointed.

Under the guidance of Unsworth, the Merseysiders went on to lose five out of eight games and showed no progress as compared to the way that they played under Koeman.

Unsworth was however praised for the work that he did to nurture the talents of youngsters such as Tom Davies, Jonjoe Kenny and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The trio have managed to successfully integrate into the first-team.

Unsworth will now be looking to kick-start his managerial career at senior level and he is currently the favourite to succeed Pep Clotlet as manager of Oxford.

If he is signed by Oxford, he will be set to reunited with former Everton player Ryan Ledson.
