Manager compares Rangers defeat to Celtic’s famous victory

Hibernian boss Neil Lennon has compared his side’s victory over Rangers on Saturday to Celtic’s famous victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.

John McGinn and Jamie MacLaren were on target for the Easter Road side which moves them to within two points of the Gers who are in third position on the Scottish Premiership standings.

Lennon was particularly impressed with the courage that his side showed during the game and he believes that their win ranks alongside the 2-1 victory which the Hoops claimed over Celtic in 2012.

“I have to pay tribute to my players,” said the Northern Irishman. “That’s right up there for me in my managerial career, next to Barcelona under the circumstances with the injuries.

“I had Paul Hanlon, Darren McGregor, Steven Whittaker and David Gray all out then we lose Brandon Barker after five minutes so I have got Lewis Stevenson, who is a left-back playing at centre-half. I have John McGinn playing left wing-back, Martin Boyle playing right wing-back.

“I’ve got two strikers who haven’t played together before and I have Scott Allan making his second debut. It’s an incredible performance and all the plaudits should go to the players. They were amazing today, especially first half. They played some unbelievably good football.”

Hibs took the lead four minutes before half-time through McGinn. The Gers managed to equalize when Sean Goss successfully converted a free-kick in the 73rd minute. MacLaren however won the game for his side from a spot-kick.
