Could suitors’ withdrawal for Celtic midfield target see club make late winter swoop?

Stadium of Light

Celtic’s chances of landing Sunderland midfielder and transfer target Jack Rodwell initially appeared to have ended after reports emerged that Eredivisie outfit Vitesse were keen on the Englishman.

The Dutch side were set to hand the former Everton and Manchester City man a trial before coming to a final decision, but they have withdrawn their offer due to organizational reasons.

Vitesse announced via their official Twitter handle: “Due to organisational reasons, Jack Rodwell’s trial with Vitesse does not take place”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was linked with a move for Rodwell last summer, and despite Sunderland’s eagerness to terminate the contract of the £70,000-a-week flop, he was once again said to be keen this window.

The Northern Irishman was reportedly confident of being capable of helping the one-cap England international revive his once-promising career, and with Vitesse now out the way, it remains to be seen if a late Celtic move for Rodwell is on the cards.

Although the Hoops could do with additional legs in midfield, a move for the Black Cats outcast seems outrageous given how poor he has been since leaving Everton.
