This Friday, January 5, 2018 (7:00 PM Pacific) the Liga MX is back as Atlas host Leon at the Estadio Jalisco for a game in the Liga MX Clausura 2018. Both teams made the playoffs in the Liga MX Apertura 2017 and should provide one of the most contested games in this opening weekend.
Atlas has had a busy offseason since finishing eighth in the Apertura 2017 and losing in the first round of the playoffs against Monterrey. Los Zorros added Chilean goalkeeper Christopher Toselli, Chilean forward Angelo Henriquez and Peruvian winger Alexi Gomez. The signing that seems the most promising is Gomez, who scored 16 goals in 45 appearances with Peruvian club Universitario from 2016-2017.
A notable return for Jose Cruz’s team will also be Colombian defender Leiton Jimenez, who missed the entire Apertura 2017 because of an injury. The defense will certainly benefit from Jimenez’s physical presence and leadership. There have also been some notable departures from the club like fullback Jose Maduena and striker Matias Alustiza. However, it seems like the team has improved from the previous tournament and should fight for a top-eight finish once again.
Leon had an extremely quiet offseason as it only added Argentine midfielder Emanuel Cecchini from Malaga and lost Diego Novaretti to Queretaro. This is not a bad thing at all as Los Esmeraldas managed to keep its best players that were rumored to leave like Mauro Boselli and Elias Hernandez.
La Fiera had a very strong Apertura 2017 finishing in seventh place and the team can certainly at the very least repeat that performance. Atlas managed to defeat Leon 3-0 the last time the two teams met but this will surely prove to be a very different game.
