It has been revealed that Crystal Palace rejected the chance to sign the world’s most expensive defender Virgil Van Dijk when he was on the books of Celtic.
“When I was at Palace, it was difficult to sign players,” Warnock said.
“I went after the centre-half at Celtic, Van Dijk, and they wanted £6million. I said ‘we have got to buy him, don’t we?’
“The chief scout went to watch him and said ‘he is not very quick, it’s Scottish football’. That was before Southampton came in for him.”
Former Eagles manager Neil Warnock has revealed that he wanted to sign Van Dijk for just £6 million when he was on the books of Celtic.
Van Dijk instead ended up joining Southampton where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly rated defenders before eventually moving to Liverpool for a fee of £75 million.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Van Dijk can bolster his defence which has been struggling this season.
