Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to rule out the possibility of selling Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk when the transfer window reopens next month.
The Reds attempted to sign the Netherlands international during the summer transfer window and were even willing to break their own transfer record in order to ensure that a deal goes ahead.
However in the end, the Saints remained adamant that they would not sell.
Transfer negotiations were also complicated by the fact that the Reds had been found guilty of “tapping up” Van Dijk and were forced to issue an apology to their counterparts.
Pellegrino has now admitted that Van Dijk’s future at the club is uncertain by saying, “I can’t control the market, I am not the owner.
“I have my opinion, I have to give to the technical director and the chairman my opinion, but the club will decide what’s best.
“I can’t control the market, and I am not the owner of the players, I will recommend to keep our best player here, in the club.”
