Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has challenged veteran striker Gabriel Agbonlahor to work hard and try to win himself a new contract at the club.
Agbonlahor has been with Villa his entire career and has been a key part of the side over the years.
However he has struggled to make an impact for the club since they were relegated from the Premier League 18 months ago and has so far been hampered by injuries this season.
The 31-year-old has been out of action for the past three months and last featured against Brentford in early September during a 0-0 draw.
Agbonlahor’s current contract with the Villains is set to expire next summer and Bruce has urged him to try and win a new deal.
He said: “The big thing for Gabby now is can he get himself back into the team and get himself fit and put himself in a position to get a new contract at the end of the season? We’ll see.
“I’ve got a totally open mind on that, of course. In over a year he’s done everything he can and he’s picked up a horrible calf injury, which is annoying. So it’s all up to Gabby.”
